It’s Only Words…

Really?

Proverbs 18:20-21 ~

The tongue has the power of life and death

Words are never only words. Previously, I posted about Elijah. So, why was this mighty man of God hiding in a cave. To simplify…a lot… Jezebel said she was going to have him killed.

I’m going to imagine myself in Elijah’s shoes for a moment. He’s overcome these false prophets. He stood up for what was right. He did what God told him to do. And he didn’t get a pat on the back, he instead received threats from Jezebel. How could that have happened? He did what he was supposed to do, yet his situation got worse.

Sometimes in our lives as Christians we think if I do this (i.e. something good), then I’ll get that (insert reward of some kind). That’s not what the Bible teaches, however. God doesn’t owe us anything for doing what we should be doing. “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” Romans 11:35

Our relationship with God isn’t a vending machine. How cold an impersonal would that be? Rather, God is our Heavenly Father. He is ALL.

But back to words. Words are sharp. They can hurt. Sometimes words are used like weapons. There may be days when someone says something to you that cuts to your heart. Words can damage… Elijah hid in a cave. And God comforted him. God didn’t come in a fire or mighty wind, but in a small, still quiet comfort.

This post is for me. I had to remember a verse I love. Psalm 46:10

Be still

And know that I am God

I wrote it like that for a reason. First, be still. Stop. Stop stressing. Stop worrying. Stop eating all that ice cream from the container. Just stop. Be still. Then once you’re still, know. Know that God is God.

Blessings to you all on this Friday,

Mal

The Wind, the Whale, and the Worm -AKA the book of Jonah

The Wind - Part 1 The Old Testament book of Jonah has always been one of my favorite parts of Scripture. The book of Jonah is so rich, so layered, each time I read it, there's always something new. Some nuance, a deeper message, hits me each time. Jonah was a prophet...
