Psalm 137 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?
This Psalm and the song based on this Psalm has been stuck in my head.
It is very difficult as we are going through trials to smile. I think today of those who have lost their homes and loved ones in the recent hurricanes that have decimated parts of the southern US. I think also of those who may be away from home, the linemen working tirelessly, the volunteers who have gone to help, the policemen, rescue workers. Those in other countries who have lost their homes. Those taken prisoner and the soldiers who haven’t seen home in a long time.
They are in a strange land…literally or figuratively. I know they are weeping remembering what the world was like “before.”
But here in this Psalm there is another layer added. These people have been taken captive by a foreign army and are being told to sing, and they are being told to smile while they’re singing.
That’s harsh…yet I have seen the people in NC (where I live) singing. Folks are literally standing in line to help others. And someone who was air dropped supplies wrote “Thank you” with sticks.
We’re all about sports here in North Carolina and at the NC State and Wake Forest Football game on Saturday, the bands from the opposing teams joined together at half time to play Amazing Grace.
Please pray for those in need today.
God Bless you all!
